Mexico City is one of the coolest places. That's because it doesn't try hard to impress. It just lives and breathes, and inspires from its soul. The city doesn't go out of its way cater to tourists; it caters to the locals. Locals, who take their food seriously, create colorful art and architecture, and stroll in lush green parks.

I travelled Solo to Mexico City, on my way to Peru. And yes, I felt safe on my own. I got around with Uber by myself, including from the airport. And I stayed in some fantastic hostels. Of course only in certain areas of the city - the center (Zocalo), and Roma Norte.

*I travelled at the beginning of October. Weather was perfect. This city is amazing - don't think, just go!

Where I stayed:

This was my first solo trip - I was nervous I wouldn't choose the right hostel, so I booked few. It would have been better to stay put, and hang out longer with people I met. But it was nice to split the time between two neighborhoods - the historic center, and Roma Norte, and I would recommend trying that.

Selina:

The location was good - in the historic center. And I met cool people.

Viajero:

I liked this one a lot - great for meeting people. They have a nice courtyard in the center where everyone has beer in the evening, or breakfast in the morning. Breakfast was included and really nice.

Metro Boutique Hostel:

Not as social, but good room in an excellent location in Roma.

Mexico City Hostel:

Nice, good location. Not social at all.

What I did:

At first I joined a free walking tour that started in the main plaza, with some people I met at the hostel. It was a great for meeting people.

There are lots cool buildings to see. And murals, including Murals by Diego Riviera

Museum of Anthropology

Really interesting museum with artifacts from the Aztecs, Mayans, and other native cultures.

Where I ate (that I can remember):

Ristorante Azul Condesa - I had tortilla soup, and delicious enchiladas with mole negro

On my first night I went to La Casa de Toño - it's a big Mexican canteen in the city center and therefore a fun experience. I had a Sopa which is a thick giant corn Tortilla, with chicken.

In Roma I went to Barrotes Delirio for breakfast which was a great cafe near my hostel. And I had a very good croissant.

There is so much to do an eat in this city. It's full of character and liveliness, and there are many good day excursions outside of the city. I will be back, I thought this place was sooo cool.
