Ah Greece! The ultimate vacation spot. Calm, stunning, authentic, friendly, and easy to explore off the beaten path. This time we rented a car in Athens and headed down south to the Peloponnese. This region is huge, full of ruins, mountains, beaches, fishing villages, wine, and good food. Everything you could possible want. I don't think you can go wrong in any area you choose here. And best is that there are few people and no resorts.

*We travelled in September. Seems to be the ultimate month for all the types of trips I like - warm enough for the sea and for the mountains, and fewer crowds.
Where we went:
Nafplion
Two hours drive from Athens, you'll arrive at the lovely port town of Nafplion. The Venetian architecture is particularly impressive as you wander through the alleyways. As well as the looming castle on the hill above the city. We stayed at Athena hotel which was super cute and cozy. You can park your car at the port there is a very big lot there.

Mani Peninsula
I love the sea, and especially turqouise waters, so my main mission was to find cozy bays to swim in. That was not hard to find. A charming area full of beautiful pebble beaches, fishing villages, mountains, and olive trees was a dream. The pictures speak for themselves.

It's really nice to go out in Areopoli at night, it's very lively. Or for breakfast.

Githio
We stayed in the area as a base for two nights. It's possible to stay nearby on the beach, which we preferred

On the way
No shortage of wineries, important ancient ruins, and more beaches are all fantastic stops as you drive back and forth from Athens.
Acrocorinth

Mycenea

Megara

And Mystras - but I didn't go there. Also Ancient Corinth.
Logistics:
Renting a car is easy in Greece. I made an online reservation in advance for pick up at Athens airport from one of the large companies. Hotels - we booked on the go which was quiet fun. Each day we booked for the evening through booking. It was possible in September, there are enough hotels in this region.
